Biological Filters utilize natural bacteria that colonize the polyester filter media which is inside the filter box or barrel. It is located on the outside of the pond where the water comes back into the pond by gravity, and not under pressure. The bio-filter must be located with the outflow above the water in the pond or above the water fall. Some bio-filters put the water back into the pond through a pipe or tubing. Other bio-filters put the water back into the pond or waterfall through a spillway. The spillway can actually be the beginning, or "header" of the falls.
It is recommended that the water is pre-filtered through a Mechanical Filter or a Skimmer. It is further recommended that an In-line Spring Check Valve be installed to prevent back flow or siphoning of the bio-filter in the event of a power outage, or if you turn off the system for servicing.

Savio Livingpond Waterfall Filter - F100
The Livingponds Waterfall Filter has a 22 inch wide waterfall opening. It comes filled with non-clogging Savio Springflo media and a layer of filter material made of polyester. There is an optional bottom drain kit available which allows you to attach a drain for easy cleaning of the filter housing. The modular design allows the units to be easily joined for additional filtration. The recommended pump flow is between 500 & 5000 GPH. The intake is a 1-1/2" female threaded connection.

The Livingponds Versatile Filter has a two inch wide outflow as shown to the left on the diagram.(The diagram shows a comparison to the F100 that uses a spillway) The pipe outlet allows placement of the filter somewhere other than at the top of a waterfall. Placement must be above the level of the pond and falls. You can place filter in a room, shed, or behind shrubs for easy disguise. Requires piping of outflow through two-inch pipe. It comes filled with non-clogging Savio Springflo media and a polyester filter mat on top. There is an optional bottom drain kit available which allows you to connect a valve at the bottom of the filter to make cleaning easy. The modular design allows the units to be easily joined in tandem for extra filtration. The recommended pump flow is between 500 & 3000 GPH.
