A mechanical filter is a quick and simple method of removing suspended particles from the water. Those particles are the ones that make the water appear cloudy or green. The mechanical filters attach to the intake of the pump and are placed on the bottom of the pond along with the pump. Both pump and filter are brought to the edge of the pond for cleaning with the garden hose.

Replaceable filter media is rinsed as needed, and replaced entirely every year or two. Replacement is necessary when the media begins to be loose in the filter container, or when it begins to break apart or collapse.

A floating filter means the filter media needs to be cleaned. If the pond is dirty or if the pond has been recently treated with a settling agent, like Accu-Clear, more frequent cleaning is needed!
