When falls arrives, no matter where you are, it is time to get your pond ready for the falling leaves and the snow that soon follows.
Your fish prepare themselves for winter by eating extra. Fish food that is formulated for cool water is a perfect mealtime treat because it's made with wheat germ. Remember, over-feeding is bad. Only feed them as much as they can eat in a five minute period. Dip the excess food out of the pond. Once the water reaches about 40 degrees or when the fish lose interest, discontinue feeding.
Keeping hands warm and dry is always a challenge on those cool fall days. Atlas Water Gardener will not only protect your hands, with a length of 27", they will also protect your arms.
Pond Netting may be stretched over the pond to catch the leaves. Once the netting is in place, the dry leaves may be removed by hand or with a Dip Net. Some gardeners have found that a leaf blower is an effective method of removing dry leaves from the netting.
Once the cold weather begins, an open area in the pond may be achieved with a Floating Pond Heater. The heater is thermostatically controlled. Running a pump that outputs a stream of water into the pond will also help keep an area open. Maybe it's time to consider a pond aeration kit to add air to the bottom of your water garden.
